Another several months, another post collecting gems from the sewage that remains of the Internet.

This essay about the state of the video games industry captures a lot of the dread that’s pervasive in many video game spaces. It remains to be seen whether an industry crash like the one that happened in ’83 is around the corner.

Folks tired of triple-A studios expecting people to buy whatever nonsense they pour into the trough should seriously consider exclusively buying indie games.

• To aid in the above, this thread on Bluesky encourages people to share their “favourite underdog games”, which they describe as games “below 500 Steam user-reviews”. I bookmarked a bunch of them with the thought of going back to buying some of them later.

Nubby’s Number Factory is a game straight out of the late ’90s. Up to now I’ve only been playing through the demo, but it’s such a polished game that I feel obligated to buy it to support this kind of dedication to an aesthetic.

• The long-rumoured Final Fantasy Tactics remake is officially anounced. The original is one of my favourite games of all-time. Its story and themes are incredibly relevant.

Sometimes I wonder why there haven’t been more titles like FFT. Perhaps people can recognize that FFT did it so well that a spiritual successor would pale in comparison?

• Capcom released a modest trailer for the latest entry in the long-running Resident Evil series. The build-up in the trailer is reminiscent of the film Longlegs. Capcom is one of the rare major companies that has managed to consistently release polished, fun titles throughout the 2010s and into the 2020s.
